When we think about coriander, we typically imagine the fresh green herb scattered over a curry, folded through a Thai salad or sprinkled over a bowl of guacamole. But the coriander hiding inside our gin is a very different character altogether. Crush a coriander seed between your fingers and you’ll discover something quite remarkable: bright citrus, gentle spice, warmth and an almost floral sweetness. It may not get the fame that juniper does, but coriander is one of gin’s true hidden heroes and at Soulmate Spirits, we think the botanicals that work quietly in the background deserve a little time in the spotlight too!
Coriander is a member of the parsley family – The fresh leaves and dried seeds come from the same plant, but they have completely different personalities. For gin, it’s the seed that we’re interested in. Once dried, the coriander seeds develop a wonderfully complex aromatic profile. Depending on the variety and where it has been grown, you can find notes reminiscent of citrus peel, spice, flowers, pepper and warm, slightly earthy tones. And this is where coriander becomes particularly interesting to us, it doesn’t simply add one flavour, it helps us to create layers.
Its naturally occurring essential oils bring a bright, almost citrus-like lift to our Soulmate Gin, while adding warmth and subtle spice underneath. It helps us to connect the different botanical flavours together, creating our beautiful gin that feels rounded, balanced and beautifully aromatic.
There is something rather lovely about coriander’s journey from a tiny seed to a carefully considered ingredient in a premium gin. At Soulmate Spirits our approach is rooted in making spirits with care, craftmanship and passion, from the raw ingredients through to the final scrumptious bottle – every botanical we select has a purpose.
